Abi Charges a Combination of Flat and Hourly Rates
I’ve found that charging a flat fee by the project versus by the hour leaves much less room for confusion and misunderstandings. Initially, all projects are based on a flat fee, per project basis, with a defined scope. Hourly rates never benefit anyone. The client doesn’t get a true idea of the value of the work and risks getting overcharged. I prefer to deliver a desired outcome, not work for X amount of hours and hope for the best. If it takes too long to achieve the goal, then I underpriced it or didn’t work efficiently enough it is my loss, but that’s not something I feel the client should suffer.
Once a range of information has been gathered about the project we give the client an estimate; based on experience; of the amount of hours the job will take. For example, I might tell a client, “I estimate that the job will take 5-7 hours. The fee is $XX”.
aBi will lay out the scope and terms of the project in writing based on the information gathered. It will include a detailed outline of the project. The client will approve it prior to starting work. We will also include the hourly rate that we will charge if extra work is needed that is beyond the scope of the original agreement.
For example, if a 2-sided, text-heavy brochure turns into a 4 or 6-panel folded piece with custom illustrations, the price would change.
We will clearly spell out how many rounds of changes or edits are included in your flat rate. Clients typically get 2-3 mockups, 2 rounds of revisions and then one final revision. Anything after the final revision is billed per hour. Clients are encouraged prior to submitting copy to make sure it has been read, edited and approved by the “powers that be” for publishing prior to the start of any project. Altering copy for more than typo’s once place can impact the layout compromising the original flat fee agreement.
For projects that the flat fee is less than $950, aBi requires 100% up front. If the fee is greater than $950 then a 75% deposit is required. Upon completion the final invoice for any additional changes or alterations introduced during the project and the remaining 25% (if applicable) will be collected. I do not send final files until final payment has been received. Once the client has submitted the final payment (if applicable) all files for that project will be released via email, uploaded for downloading or via CD/DVD. The transfer method will be determined by the size of the files.
All project quotes are custom to the client and project. Please contact us for your custom quote.
